pH Lab Analysis
Standard: 5e. - I know how to determine whether a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral.
1. Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
This standard meets the assignment, because we were experimenting with ten different solutions to find out if the solutions were acids, bases, or neutral. We determined this by using litmus paper. If the solution turned the paper a cool tone, it was basic. If the paper turned warm toned, it was acidic.
2) Elaborate on at least 1 Science & Engineering Practice you feel you met/gained from COMPLETING this project.
The Science & Engineering Practices (SEP) identified are listed below:
1. ASK QUESTIONS and defining problems 5. Using mathematics and COMPUTATIONAL thinking
2. Developing and using models 6. Constructing explanations & designing solutions
3. Planning and carrying out investigations 7. Engaging in argument from evidence
4. Analyzing and interpreting data 8. Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating infoI met the 4th SEP by completing this project. I had to put solutions onto pieces of litmus paper and figure out whether or not each solution is an acid, a base, or neutral. I had to explain why that solution is an acid, base, or neutral with evidence to support my reasoning.
3. Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects?
I could have been more descriptive as to why the solutions may have been acidic or basic. Improving in this area will benefit my future works, because being descriptive earns higher points.
4. How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world, outside the classroom? Make connections between the content and your life.
In the real world, I can now notice what might be acidic or basic. In class we learned about items that are acidic and basic.
