Westward Expansion Group Project
Standard 8.8.2: Describe the purpose, challenges, and economic incentives associated with westward expansion, including the concept of Manifest Destiny (e.g., The Lewis and Clark Expedition, accounts of the removal of the Indians, the Cherokees' "Trail of Tears, settlement of the Great Plains) and the territorial acquisitions that spanned numerous decades.
1) Justify how this project/activity/assignment meets the standard, using evidence from the standard itself to demonstrate your mastery and/or understanding.
The standard was to be able to describe the purpose and challenges of the westward expansion. In the project my group was assigned to, we had to describe the missionaries, the Whitmans and Spaldings and their journey on their attempt of converting Native Americans in the west. So their purpose was religious spreads, and their challenges was the Native Americans who ended up killing them.
2) Elaborate on at least 1 skill and/or strength you feel you gained from completing this project. (Coloring and or drawing are not skills to write about - elaborate on life skills you can take out of this project
We had to present this project as a group. I feel like I have strengthened in that area. I am now better at working with groups and group presentations. I am more comfortable working within groups and presenting on different sections of events I was assigned to. I have gained more experience in working in a group and working on different sections.
3) Upon reflecting on your work/score, what is ONE area of work you could have done better on? How will improving in this area benefit future work/projects? (Coloring and or drawing are not skills to write about - research skills, time management, etc..
I think I could have given more thought into this project. My poster looks like it could ward off Satan. It only looks like that, because I was half joking around and made everyone in my group draw a bunch of crosses and bibles to kill time. I could have also received full group presentation points for this project by speaking more clearly and including for intricate details, because the rubric tells us we did an okay job, but not a great job of doing that. My group earned a 26/28.
4) How will you presently apply the content and skills you learned from this assignment in the real world (outside of the classroom, particularly in today's society). Make connections between the content and you life.
In the real world, I'll have to work with groups of people and be able to present. So, In real life, I could put that into use. It'll come in handy later on, as our school makes it obvious that presentations are important in real life. Also, being able to work on my separate part within the group and being able to finish it will be important later on when I am working with a group.
