Greek Mask Project
8.VA.2.6-Design and create both additive and subtractive sculptures.
1. Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
This assignment relates to the standard because to create a mask, using additive and subtractive techniques are needed to create the mask's face. I had to add paper to create dimension, and cut out holes to make eyes and mouth. So, I used additive and subractive techniques, like the standard needs me to.
2. What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
First, we used a paper-mache type of strategy and soaked strips of paper with glue and pasted them onto a balloon. We built layers and dryed them. The next day, we cut it in half and gave one half to our partner. We then used subtractive and additive strategies to make emotions or make features on the mask. We then painted and added construction paper and 3d objects onto the mask.
3. This assignment demonstrates the following strengths…
This assignment shows my understanding that the Greek masks were used to show emotion and for acts. This project shows that I know what additive and subtractive method is. It shows I can make a Greek mask and show emotion on the mask.
4. I could have improved my work on this assignment by…
. I could have made my work cleaner and put more effort into it. I could have made my work cleaner by actually taking this project seriously and not have made it look like trash. This mask was supposed to be Bacchus, but instead, it looks like a man with a twiddle upper lip hair. But, that's okay because I'm bad at sculpting anyway. The paint looks uneven and not okay but that's okay too because the layers of my paper-mache was horrible. I tried.
5. How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
If I ever decide get into performing arts I can use my knowledge that these masks are put on for show and to show emotion of characters. Also, I know how to make a very bad mask now. If anyone wants to hire me to make bad masks that'd be cool.
